From August 18 – 20, 2026, EMC team members from the Administration, Technical, Marine, and Foundation Departments participated in a three-day First Aid, CPR & AED Certification Training. The training combined classroom-based learning with practical, hands-on sessions designed to strengthen staff preparedness to respond effectively to workplace emergencies and incidents encountered during field activities.
Facilitated by Ms. Melisa Alstrom of the Guyana Red Cross Society, the training covered essential first aid procedures and emergency response techniques. Participants learned how to assess and respond to a range of medical emergencies and injuries, including cardiac emergencies, stroke, shock, diabetic emergencies, heat-related illnesses, poisoning, wounds, and bleeding. Emphasis was also placed on recognising signs and symptoms, assessing a casualty’s condition, and determining when additional medical assistance is required.
The practical sessions provided participants with opportunities to apply their knowledge through hands-on exercises. These included CPR, rescue breaths and chest compressions, recovery positions, casualty movement, responding to airway obstructions, and managing severe or life-threatening external bleeding. Scenario-based activities further challenged participants to assess emergencies and determine appropriate responses.
The training forms part of EMC’s continued commitment to staff safety, preparedness, and professional development. By strengthening both knowledge and practical skills, the sessions equipped team members with greater confidence to respond calmly and appropriately during emergencies, whether in the workplace or while conducting field-based activities.
