EMC Team Strengthens Technical Capacity through Training in Advanced Standardised Methods for Biological Assessments and Monitoring for the Guianas

From August 24–28, 2026, The Environmental Management Consultants Inc. (EMC) team participated in a five-day Advanced Standardised Methods for Vertebrate Surveys and Monitoring for the Guianas training programme, led by Biodiversity Specialist Dr. Francis Clarke.

Conducted within the Mahaica River Watershed, the training aimed to strengthen participants’ technical expertise in biodiversity assessment, standardised wildlife survey methodologies and emerging monitoring technologies, building on their existing field experience.

Through a combination of theoretical sessions and practical field exercises, participants explored live-trapping techniques, bioacoustic monitoring, standardised boat-based wildlife surveys, nocturnal surveys, drone-based bird monitoring and camera trapping. The programme also introduced technologies such as the Echo Meter, Kaleidoscope Lite software and artificial intelligence-assisted data analysis to enhance wildlife detection, data interpretation and long-term monitoring.

Field activities provided opportunities to apply these techniques across various taxonomic groups, including birds, bats, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and aquatic species. Particular emphasis was placed on integrating complementary survey methods, improving data quality and designing effective biodiversity monitoring programmes.

Participant evaluations demonstrated a strong understanding of the methodologies covered and readiness to apply the techniques independently in future monitoring activities.

The programme concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony, during which EMC Managing Director Mr. Shyam Nokta congratulated participants and highlighted the importance of continued technical development.

“Advancing your skills in terms of biodiversity assessment and monitoring, it puts this team in a unique position.”

Mr. Nokta further emphasised that the training would enhance the quality and standards of EMC’s fieldwork throughout Guyana, particularly as the organisation continues to expand its project portfolio and biodiversity monitoring activities.

The training represents another important step in EMC’s commitment to strengthening national technical capacity, advancing biodiversity conservation and supporting science-based environmental management. The knowledge and practical skills gained will contribute to ongoing monitoring efforts within the Mahaica River Watershed and other biodiversity assessment initiatives across Guyana.
