Thirteen residents of Tapakuma Village, Region 2, participated in an intensive Tour Guiding and Interpretation Training programme from October 7 to 11, 2025. The programme was designed to strengthen community tourism and support sustainable local development. The training was delivered by Environmental Management Consultants Inc. (EMC) in collaboration with the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), with support from the Guyana Conservation Initiative (GCI), implemented by EMC and the Iwokrama International Centre through funding from the ExxonMobil Foundation.
Tourism Consultants, Mr. Kenneth Shvidyal and Mr. Wally Prince, led the sessions, bringing extensive experience in community tourism, guiding techniques, and interpretative storytelling. Participants, many of whom are already involved in tourism, conservation, or community initiatives, were introduced to a range of practical skills to enhance visitor experience and support Tapakuma’s growing tourism offerings.
A central focus of the programme was professionalism and understanding visitor needs. Participants learned about effective communication, customer care, and how to cultivate positive, respectful interactions with guests. The training also emphasised responsible tourism, encouraging approaches that safeguard Tapakuma’s natural environment, cultural identity, and traditional knowledge.
Throughout the programme, participants were engaged in hands-on exercises in interpretative guiding and itinerary planning, learning how to design meaningful tours based on the village’s vibrant culture, lake systems, and natural attractions. Additional sessions on tour management and leadership strengthened organisational and decision-making skills essential for operating successful community tours.
The programme combined classroom learning with practical field activities, allowing participants to immediately apply new techniques, build confidence, and experience real-time guiding scenarios. Many noted that the exercises helped them better interpret their surroundings and communicate Tapakuma’s stories with clarity and pride.
With strong community interest and growing tourism assets, Tapakuma Village is steadily emerging as a promising eco- and community-based tourism destination. The completion of this training marks an important step in supporting the village as it develops new experiences for visitors and contributes to Guyana’s expanding sustainable tourism landscape.
This initiative is part of ongoing efforts by EMC and the GTA to build capacity among community-based tourism operators across Guyana. Through the GCI, EMC continues to prioritise community empowerment, local leadership, and sustainable development, supporting national goals to advance responsible, inclusive tourism while preserving the country’s rich cultural and environmental heritage.
