EMC and NAREI Remain Steadfast in Nationwide Mangrove Education and Awareness Efforts through the Distribution of Mangrove Library Corners

From 3–5 December 2025, Environmental Management Consultants Inc. (EMC), in collaboration with the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), delivered Mangrove Awareness Library Corners to five secondary schools and two branches of the National Library across Berbice, Linden, West Coast Demerara and Essequibo.

During the three-day exercise, EMC and NAREI representatives presented the Library Corners to Mahaicony, J.C. Chandisingh, Christiansburg Wismar, Tuschen and Abram Zuil Secondary Schools, as well as to the New Amsterdam and Corriverton National Libraries.

The Library Corners feature a range of publications on mangroves and biodiversity, including Mangrove Forest Guide, About the Mangrove Restoration & Management Programme, Restoring Guyana’s Coastal Mangrove Ecosystems and Coastal Waterbirds of Mangroves. Also on display are mangrove by-products such as 100% organic honey, honey soap and beeswax candles, showcasing sustainable livelihood opportunities that support communities working within mangrove ecosystems. Together, these materials provide valuable information on mangrove ecology, biodiversity, social and ecological benefits, threats, and national restoration efforts to conserve Guyana’s mangrove forests.

This initiative will support over 3,200 students, along with teachers and surrounding communities, in strengthening environmental literacy and deepening their understanding and appreciation of mangroves. The Library Corners aim to encourage learning about the important roles mangroves play in maintaining healthy coastal and riverine environments, supporting livelihoods and contributing to coastal protection. To commemorate the handovers, representatives and beneficiaries participated in photo opportunities at each location.

The Mangrove Awareness Library Corners initiative forms part of the Guyana Conservation Initiative (GCI), implemented by EMC and the Iwokrama International Centre with funding support from the ExxonMobil Foundation. Through GCI, partners continue to invest in environmental education, community engagement and the promotion of conservation awareness across Guyana.
