Biodiversity Research at Saxacalli Rainforest Centre
EMC Inc, in collaboration with a team from the Iwokrama International Centre participated in a camera trapping training to monitor mammalian life at the Saxacalli Rainforest Centre. The exercise, conducted over the period September 20 to 22, 2021, is part of a larger initiative from the Bioamazon Project to monitor and control fauna and flora species as part of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO). Iwokrama along with Guyana Wildlife Conservation and Management Commission (GWCMC) will monitor the diversity and abundance of wildlife in Guyana under the project.
The exercise at Saxacalli Rainforest Centre focused on the abundance of tapir, yellow-footed and red-footed tortoises in the area. The team was successful in capturing tortoises and were also fortunate to observe the presence of several other species, including wild hogs, deer tracks, and frog eating bats.
