Turtle Program 2025- Dialogue and Capacity Building Workshop Opens
Environmental Management Consultants Inc. (EMC Inc.) and The Turtle Conservancy & Chelonian Research Institute are collaborating to host a Marine Turtle Conservation Dialogue and Capacity Building Workshop.
Close to 20 biologists and environmental conservation experts drawn from key Government Agencies and NGOs are benefiting from this two-day workshop which focuses on satellite tagging methods, telemetry tracking methods and other turtle conservation practices.
This seminar is a lead up to the 2025 Marine Turtle Telemetry Program which is being implemented at Shell Beach and lead by the Protected Areas Commission.
This year’s Turtle Program will see turtle telemetry tagging being done, as well sea turtle conservation training, and youth camps. The turtle tracking exercise is important since it provides valuable insights into the turtles’ feeding, migratory and nesting patterns.
Guyana has four (4) species of endangered marine turtles – the leatherback sea turtle, green sea turtle, Hawksbill sea turtle and the Olive Ridley sea turtle, which visit our shores, primarily at Shell Beach, Region 1.
There is a long history of sea turtle conservation efforts at Shell Beach which continues today, being led by the Protected Areas Commission and with support from participating agencies including Guyana’s Environmental Protection Agency, Guyana Marine Conservation Society, Guyana Wildlife Conservation and Management Commission.
